Celebration of the World Arabic Language Day

Celebration of the World Arabic Language Day

World Arabic Language Day is celebrated every year on December 18 since 2012. This date coincides with the day when, in 1973, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the Organization, alongside Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. This resolution was adopted with the support of many Arab countries.
By adding Arabic as an official language, the United Nations recognized its importance in all the diversity of its forms, classical or dialectal, from its oral expression, through its artistic written expression to poetic calligraphy, and recently to calligraffiti, the Arabic language has given birth to a fascinating aesthetic, in fields as varied as architecture, poetry, philosophy and song. It provides access to an incredible variety of identities and beliefs. (More than 440 million people).
The UN thereby recognizes its history and the richness of its links with other languages. This language which played the role of vector in the dissemination of knowledge, by translating and commenting on Greek and Roman sciences and philosophies, and by spreading them, in Renaissance Europe. It enabled a dialogue of cultures along the Silk Road, in the old world, and within the Empire where it reigned for centuries.

Aware of its richness, UNESCO has titled the 2023 edition of this day “Arabic, the language of poetry and the arts”, with the aim of paying tribute to its poetic and artistic brilliance.
Algeria, for its part, played an important role in promoting this language at the United Nations. Algerian President Houari BOUMEDIENE has been a strong advocate of its use as an official language at the United Nations. In 1974, he made a point of giving a speech in Arabic devoted to the Palestinian question, during the extraordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly. This marked an important moment in the use of the Arabic language in the international context and at the UN.
Algeria continued to play an active role in promoting this language in international forums and supporting its use in various diplomatic meetings, which helped to strengthen the presence and importance of this language in international affairs.
