Mr. Chaib receives the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Inter-Parliamentary Assembly

The State Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaib, received today at the ministry's headquarters the Secretary-General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Mr. Chem Widhya, as part of his working visit to Algeria—the first of its kind since the People's National Assembly joined the assembly as an observer parliament nearly a year ago.

The State Secretary opened the meeting by extending his congratulations to the Secretary-General of the organization on assuming his duties at the beginning of this year, emphasizing the importance of continuing to strengthen cooperation between the two sides during the upcoming phase, both at the bilateral level with the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and within multilateral channels.

The meeting served as an opportunity to review Algeria's relations with the Southeast Asian region and explore ways to enhance them, particularly in light of recent developments. These include Algeria's accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in July 2025—supported by all member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations—as well as the People's National Assembly joining the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly as an observer parliament.

The two sides also emphasized the importance of continuing joint efforts to strengthen exchange and consultation frameworks, develop coordination and dialogue mechanisms, and leverage the parliamentary dimension to promote closer ties between Algeria and the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This approach aims to open broader horizons for cooperation across various fields of mutual interest, contributing to the advancement of peace, stability, development, and international cooperation among peoples.
