Mr. Chaib Participates in 12th Session of APRM National Focal Points Steering Committee

The Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaib, participated today, 21 July 2026, via videoconference, in the proceedings of the 12th Session of the Steering Committee of National Focal Points of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

This annual meeting was held as part of the follow-up to the implementation of the decisions adopted at the 35th Summit of the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government, convened in Addis Ababa last February. Held under the rotating chairmanship of the Republic of Uganda, the session reviewed the implementation of the decisions and recommendations arising from the previous session chaired by Algeria and assessed the progress made in implementing the Mechanism’s programme of work. It also addressed a number of organizational and institutional matters aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the APRM and consolidating its role in promoting good governance across the African continent.

In his intervention, the Secretary of State, in his capacity as Algeria’s National Focal Point for the African Peer Review Mechanism, reaffirmed Algeria’s firm commitment to continuing its support for the reform of the Mechanism and strengthening its position as one of the fundamental pillars of the African governance architecture. Such efforts contribute to consolidating the principles of good governance, supporting sustainable development and achieving the objectives of Africa’s Agenda 2063.

He also highlighted the leading role played by Algeria during its chairmanship of the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government for the 2024–2026 period, particularly in launching the African Governance Index Report project, which constituted one of the main areas of discussion during the meeting.

He explained that the Index represents a strategic tool for assessing governance performance in African countries on a scientific and data-driven basis, thereby supporting decision-making and enabling the monitoring of progress in governance at the continental level. In this context, he indicated that Algeria’s national report relating to the Index would soon be submitted to the APRM Continental Secretariat.

In conclusion, the Secretary of State renewed Algeria’s commitment, as a member of the Troika of the APRM Chairmanship, to continuing its active contribution to strengthening African cooperation, sharing its national expertise and supporting capacity-building efforts, in a manner that promotes good governance and African integration and gives effect to the vision of “The Africa We Want” set out in the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
