Mr. Attaf Represents Algeria at the 50th Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Group of 77 and China in New York

The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, represented Algeria at the 50th Ministerial Meeting of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 and China, held in New York on the margins of the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In the address he delivered on this occasion, Mr. Ahmed Attaf highlighted the prominent stature enjoyed by the Group in light of the profound transformations taking place in the international system, which make the unity and solidarity of the countries of the Global South an absolute necessity.

The Minister of State pointed to the need for a more equitable multilateral action that places development at the core of priorities and addresses structural imbalances in the international financial architecture, thereby allowing the countries of the South fair access to resources and technology and supporting capacity building.

Furthermore, Mr. Ahmed Attaf called for concerted efforts to ensure that the digital revolution and artificial intelligence do not turn into a new source of divide between the North and the South, and that technology serves as a tool for development and human empowerment within inclusive global governance where knowledge is neither monopolized nor access restricted.

Regarding climate change response, the Minister of State reaffirmed the renewal of commitment to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, emphasizing that developing nations—particularly in Africa—bear increasing impacts of climate change despite their limited historical and current contributions to its causes. This makes climate finance, technology transfer, and support for the most vulnerable countries responsibilities that must be fulfilled without delay.

Finally, the Minister of State stressed that Algeria, guided by its commitment to the principles of the 1967 Charter of Algiers, will remain firmly engaged in fostering South-South cooperation, defending the right of peoples to development, and building a more just, inclusive international order that is more responsive to the aspirations of all peoples for growth and prosperity.
