Mr. Attaf Participates in the High-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development

The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, participated today in New York in the High-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly convened to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development.

In an address delivered on this occasion, the Minister of State emphasized that the right to development—established by the United Nations Declaration adopted in 1986 as a fundamental human right—takes on renewed significance today amidst persistent poverty, growing inequalities, exacerbating debt burdens, and the compounding crises and structural imbalances affecting the international economic order.

Mr. Ahmed Attaf emphasized that development is not merely measured by economic growth, but must be comprehensive and sustainable, placing human beings, their dignity, and their well-being at the heart of development efforts. In the same context, he stressed the necessity of respecting state sovereignty and the right of nations to determine their own development priorities and choices, as well as the right of peoples to self-determination.

Furthermore, the Minister of State called for the enhancement of international solidarity and cooperation, as well as the reform of the international economic and financial system to respond more equitably to the needs of developing countries. In this framework, he reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to solidarity with African nations and to supporting their development projects.

Mr. Ahmed Attaf concluded his address by reaffirming Algeria’s support for the adoption of a legally binding international instrument on the right to development, which would contribute to strengthening the international legal framework and ensuring the full and effective realization of this right.
