Mr. Attaf participated in the Ministerial meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council

The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, participated this morning, via videoconference, in a ministerial meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union.

The meeting was devoted to the theme “Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa” and to discussing ways of strengthening continental efforts in this field at both the institutional and operational levels, particularly within the framework of the Strategic Action Plan for Counter-Terrorism (2026–2030). The Plan forms part of the proposals put forward by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in his capacity as the African Union Champion for Combating Terrorism and Violent Extremism.

In his address on this occasion, Mr. Ahmed Attaf stressed the need to make effective use of African frameworks and mechanisms in order to develop a comprehensive and integrated vision for countering terrorism, while highlighting the transformation observed in the nature of terrorist groups’ activities. He emphasized that the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has warned on numerous occasions that terrorism has become both a threat to the security of the African continent and an obstacle to development efforts, thereby requiring an in-depth adaptation of the African Union’s approach to addressing this threat.

In his intervention, he also called for strengthening the partnership with the United Nations, recalling Algeria’s sustained efforts during its term on the United Nations Security Council, particularly through its contribution to following up on the implementation of the presidential statement on “Counter-Terrorism”, adopted by the Security Council in January 2025 during Algeria’s presidency of the Council.

In conclusion, the Minister of State affirmed Algeria’s full confidence in Africa’s ability to defeat terrorism. He stressed that overcoming this scourge requires strengthening State institutions, providing security services with the necessary resources, addressing the root causes of terrorism, and reinforcing international partnerships.
