Mr. Attaf heads the Algerian delegation at the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly

The General Debate of the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly opened today, Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in New York, with this year's proceedings centered around the theme: "Restoring Trust and Managing Transformation: The United Nations Serving Everyone."

Discussions during this UN event are expected to focus on a range of issues and challenges facing the international community, particularly topics related to peace and security across various regions of the world, and renewing commitment to multilateralism—especially in light of persistent practices that undermine international law, human rights, and international economic cooperation. The debates will also address the difficulties encountered by developing countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the challenges arising from climate change and those linked to the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence systems.

Algeria is participating in the work of this high-level week with a delegation led by Mr. Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs.

This participation reflects Algeria’s unwavering commitment, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to strengthening multilateral cooperation and promoting just and sustainable solutions to the various challenges and crises on the regional and international scenes. It also serves to highlight the rigorous efforts exerted by Algeria at the national level in the economic and social spheres, particularly in accelerating the energy transition, managing water resources, healthcare, education, and higher education, alongside the initiatives it has launched to promote peace, security, and development across several Sahel-Saharan countries and Africa as a whole.

Algeria’s participation in this UN milestone is expected to include a series of meetings, consultations, and discussions with several sisterly and friendly nations, as well as senior UN officials. These engagements aim to maintain coordination and exchange views on key issues on the agenda of the current session of the General Assembly, while highlighting Algeria's regional and international role in promoting peace, stability, and development.
